Did the Director of the FBI Just Attempt to Influence the General Election?
Just when you thought the Hillary Clinton email scandal was over and done with, in comes James Comey of the F.B.I. to bring this controversy back to life from up out of the grave it was in. Due to this letter to certain members of Congress he sent stating that new evidence has come to his attention with regards to the Hillary Clinton email situation; The Director has inserted himself into the General Election at a time that can only be to Donald Trump's benefit.
Let's be clear from the beginning, I'm not voting for Clinton in the General Election and at one point in time I did hope charges would be brought against her. I wanted this to happen months ago when Bernie Sanders being a fallback was a possible outcome. That outcome is no longer realistic this close to election day and was even unlikely back in July when many wanted it to happen in the first place.
Fact of the matter is, this is a bad look for a lot of people. It's a bad look on James Comey and the F.B.I., it's a bad look on Hillary Clinton because once again people are being reminded about how corruption seems to follow her and her family. It's a bad look on Barack Obama even who appointed James Comey, a Republican, in 2013 to the position he's in now. You can now add Comey's name to a list of bad appointees by Obama that includes Timothy Geithner, Larry Summers and Debbie Wasserman-Shultz. I guess this is that 3-dimensional chess Obama plays a lot according to his most ardent of supporters.
James Comey's day may be numbered and it is possible for a President to fire the Director of the F.B.I., so that is a tool Clinton can use at her discretion if/when she gets into the White House. That is also a power Obama has, but I highly doubt he'd do something like that and generate that much controversy so close to the election. Besides, Obama was the one who appointed Comey in 2013.
According to former Justice Department official Matt Miller, James Comey also may have violated internal policy within the Justice Department by making a public announcement about an investigation. Not only that, but apparently Attorney General Loretta Lynch made it clear to the F.B.I. Director that no comments should be made that could influence the election...advice that Comey apparently decided wasn't necessary to take.
One cannot know what is going on inside the mind of the F.B.I. Director, nor what his ultimate motivations were when he released this information to members of Congress. I happen to agree with the former deputy Attorney General's from the Clinton and Bush administrations who both say that what Comey has done is not only in violation with Justice department policy, but is in fact a threat to American democracy. They didn't use those words specifically, they simply said he's "damaging" American democracy. Well then that is a threat...is it not? I can name some other things that are threats to American democracy too, much bigger threats. Threats we face regardless of whether it's Clinton in office or Donald Trump.
I think the biggest takeaway from all of this is that it's already come out that this issue won't be settled before the election is over, forcing members of Congress to demand an update from Comey by this Monday on 10/31. So the million-dollar question is then, why would Comey make a public statement about a case that was supposedly closed 11 days before the election...knowing that it wouldn't be resolved before said election? On paper, it seems like the willingness by Democrats to appease Republicans is once again blowing up in their faces. Let's just pray it doesn't blow up in the collective faces of America in the process.
