Charlotte Erupts in Righteous Protest Over The Murder of Keith Lamont Scott
Right now all I feel is rage, anger, depression, sadness and disgust. All at once. It is not a good combination, but this is my release. My way of making sense of a country that continues to play patty cake with Black lives. Information is still coming out and as of the typing of this, protests have quickly turned up in the city of Charlotte in North Carolina over the murder of Keith Lamont Scott. A man who by all accounts was waiting for his child to get off a schoolbus and was reading a book before he was gunned down for looking like a suspect.
How long are we going to make ourselves believe that this is happening by accident?
We had just heard about the incident of Terence Crutcher's murder in Tulsa yesterday! Why can't I go on social media without hearing about another Black man or woman being shot and killed by police or dying in a jail cell? How many tens of thousands of Black bodies have to pile up in this "free" country before Congress does something? You know, more than they did hopefully for lynching victims. We all know, or should know, that the American government sat back and allowed lynching to occur for decades without intervening. Well we are living in the age of the neo-lynching. That's my new word...neo-lynching. This is that new age lynching. The kind where you create a scenario that didn't exist and come in as the solution to the problem and immediately kill and figure out the rest of your story later. That's exactly what's happening in many of these cases.
If people are so tired of hearing Black people talk about state violence and police corruption, then do something about it! Stop complaining about our complaints and fix the problem. Unless of course you don't believe there's a problem...and if you're in that camp...at this point I consider you a willful idiot. If you don't get it by now, then you are consciously, intentionally and deliberately looking for an excuse because it's not about the truth for you. It's about stroking your nationalistic ego and being a contrarian just for the hell of it. At worst, you agree with what's being done and therefore are a white supremacist. It's either one or the other.
I feel for the families of the victims. Those men and women who didn't need to die and had their names smeared in the media as criminals in a twisted attempt to justify their murders. Alleged Black criminality has been used as an excuse to murder, maim, experiment on and sterilize Black men and women for well over a century now. Over two or three centuries if you count slavery. Just read one of my latest blog entries entitled 8 Horrific Examples of Scientific Racism Against Black People in America. It is based on the research of Harriet Washington, author of the book 'Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present. All throughout her book she documents how Black criminality has been used to justify all sorts of scientific racism against our community. The portrayal of Black people are innately violent goes back many generations. So I feel sorry for the families that they have to go through that. That they have to be modern day victims of white supremacy, a relic from the early modern period that was used as a justification for slavery...among other things.
Lastly, where the heck is Congress? Where is the North Carolina General Assembly...the legislative body of the state of North Carolina? I know one thing however. I think we can all rest assured that Governor Pat McCrory won't make this situation any better. How is it that unlawful state murders of civilians is not taken more seriously prompting immediate changes? Something is surely amiss when an entire community needs to lose its collective mind just to get any reaction out of their elected "leaders." If we can call them that at this point. Where is the DNC? They want the Black vote when it's convenient, but get real silent as black bodies pile up. Yet they have the nerve to wonder why many Black millennials are looking for other options politically. The answer is staring them right back in their faces.
I think I've vented enough for one night. It is late and I need rest. My soul needs rest.
