Black and Intellectual Is Being Redesigned - Stay Tuned!
This month marks the 3 year anniversary of Black and Intellectual. When the site first launched in 2016, Squarespace made the most sense back then. I wanted to get a site up quickly without spending a lot of money for a professional web design job. Times have changed and there are things I want to do now to help the site grow that I can’t do. Squarespace is very limited in terms of theme options and plugins and I feel like the blog has outgrown the platform.
Black and Intellectual is being transitioned to Wordpress. Wordpress is perfect for what I need to do and unlike 3 years ago, I am very good at web design now. There will be a new logo, new theme, new everything and all of it will be custom-built. Another thing is recently I’ve run tests on the websites page speeds and the results were terrible. There are many variables that impact page speed. Needless to say, being on Squarespace isn’t helping so I need to get on a host that can maximize my site performance and give me more control over how my site runs. Google considers page speed one of its top ranking factors, so if it’s taking your Home page 8-10 seconds to load - that’s a massive problem.
There are currently around 245 articles that have been written on the Black and Intellectual blog over the past 3 years. Hours and hours of work, yet my site doesn’t rank for things in Google that it could rank for. So changes have to be made starting with a new website on a new server. More attention will be paid to search engine optimization, memberships, user engagement, functionality, etc. My goal is by the Summer, I want to get double the amount of organic traffic that I’m getting now - if not more.
So that’s the update. I’m very excited about the plans I have for the blog going forward and you guys will LOVE what I do with the new site. It’s going to stand out, it’s going to be fast and the content will drop more consistently. Stay tuned!
