Richard Collins III was stabbed to death by a member of a Facebook hate group known as the Alt-Reich on Saturday as he and his friends waited on a Uber. Collins III was just 23 and died while at the hospital, his attacker Sean Christopher Urbanski was later apprehended and taken into police custody. The authorities investigating the case are currently determining whether or not they're going to label the incident a hate crime.
Urbanski is being held without bail and was described as "intoxicated" when he was initially apprehended. It's also being disclosed through other sources that the killer and the victim did not know each other. I think that's less important than the appearance that Collins was targeted by Urbanski who affiliates himself with online white supremacist groups. Being drunk isn't going to make you kill someone, so let's not blame it on the alcohol.
With the rise of Trumpism and far-right extremism, we have to be on the lookout for random acts of violence like this. Let's also not forget about the other stabbing that took place in New York back in March where the killer, in that case, went out of his way to target Black people. Hate crimes are up multiple years in a row now, not just in the U.S., but in the U.K. too. So as long as right-wing extremism remains a threat, I will continue to write about it.
