Hillary Clinton Has Pneumonia and the Future of America Hangs in the Balance
Let me start out by saying that I hope Hillary Clinton remains healthy. Nothing I write here comes with intent or joy in seeing her go through whatever it is she's going through. We know that she at least has pneumonia per her doctor. She was able to recover and was seen emerging from her daughter's home a while later. Understand however that we are at the point in time when we have to take the Clinton campaign's word about her health with a grain of salt. Some wonder if the pneumonia revelation would even have had come out if the video of her fainting hadn't leaked to the public as she left the 9/11 ceremony yesterday.
I have to be perfectly honest, I did not believe the speculation prior to yesterday about Hillary Clinton having some sort of major health concern. I thought that whatever was going on was minor and maybe she had a bad cold that wouldn't go away due to her campaigning and almost certainly having a lack of sleep. Campaigning to be President of the United States I'm sure wears on you after a while, but not something as serious as fainting spells, weird seizure-like episodes and random disappearances. Disappearances like the one she made after the 9/11 ceremony which was sudden to begin with, and let's also not forget during one of the primary debates she was nowhere to be seen for about 10-15 minutes while Sanders and Martin O'Malley stood on the debate stage alone! No, whatever is going on appears to be serious.
While many people survive pneumonia, it does have the potential to be fatal. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as of 2013 pneumonia and influenza ranked 8th in terms of the leading causes of death at a little over 56,000. The data also shows that like most illnesses and ailments, the older you get, the more susceptible you are to dying from said illness. According to the CDC, the death rate for persons with pneumonia between the ages of 65 and 74 is 29.5! This is compared to 1.0 for those between the ages of 25 and 34 (information for that statement is on page 34 of the link above). Hillary Clinton is 68 and clearly no spring chicken. So as I said, this is not something that people should be brushing off. While those numbers aren't nearly as bad as they are for the 74-84 age group (in which pneumonia is nearly completely fatal), nearly 30% for Clinton's age group isn't very comforting especially if the pneumonia revelation is in fact hiding something even more serious as some have alluded to.
However I find it interesting how many people made an issue of Bernie Sanders and his age as a potential reason for his being unfit to be President...just to have a candidate in Hillary Clinton who's health is now a major issue in her political campaign. There may be a little bit of negative karma at play here as Bernie Sanders appears very healthy at his age.
I also want to say that I'm not buying the idea that this is a stunt by the Clinton campaign. A stunt to do what exactly? Gain sympathy so people can vote for her? That makes no sense and is counter-productive if true because all this is doing is making people even more worried than they were before. Now Clinton's health is no longer a conspiracy theory are some tried to say it was, now it's a major cause for concern.
For all of Clinton's hardcore supporters, to her donors on Wall Street, to her backers within the plutocratic establishment in Washington...I can imagine everyone simply wants her to hang in there for a little under 2 months as the November election draws near. This desire for Clinton simply to win regardless of her health, her policies and everything else continues the trend of the deeply disturbing Presidential coronation of the former First Lady that began at the beginning of this election season. Truly, it's so bad that when Dr. Drew went public about his feeling that Hillary Clinton's healthcare was not up to par, his show was canceled on CNN effective September 22.
Hillary Clinton supporters are convinced they made the right decision to get behind her candidacy and a lot of good Progressives have chosen to sacrifice their ideals and political beliefs for some pretty silly reasons. Reasons that include continued support of a thoroughly corrupt, plutocratic political entity known as the Democratic Party. Reasons that also include wanting to see a woman President, regardless of the political positions of said woman. Reasons that include some strange sense of loyalty that some seem to have for the Clinton brand. Loyalty that has clearly become played out at this point. Her supporters are so convinced of some, or all, of these things that they are prepared to blame her potential loss on Bernie Sanders/Jill Stein supporters. Not on the fact that they got behind a candidate who actual true progressives warned was a weak nominee months ago. This now on top of her health problems.
The polling lately has shown that Clinton's lead is not that strong. Some polls have shown her with a mere 1 or 2 point lead which is basically a tie. Polls that show her in a 4-way race with Jill Stein and Gary Johnson only show her with a 1-3 point lead. This is all very troubling for a women going up against a fascist and white supremacist like Donald Trump who should be getting crushed right now.
The future of America hangs in the balance and if Clinton's health continues to deteriorate to the point of her needing to drop out or be replaced, the DNC would be wise to tap Bernie Sanders. Not Tim Kaine or Joe Biden...neither of whom ran in the primary without a single person to ever vote for them. Over 12 million Americans voted for Bernie Sanders and head-to-head polling against Trump put him in the double digits. He was the only person running that had a positive favorability rating as well. If the DNC wants to win, they'll use whatever means they can do make sure he's on the ballot in November. More than likely however, they'd rather risk a fascist white supremacist as President if it means keeping a true Progressive out of office. A move that will almost certainly deal a significant blow to the Democratic Party image and brand if Donald Trump were to really beat Joe Biden or Tim Kaine in a hypothetical matchup.
More than likely however, they will spin this for as long as they can. We will watch them as closely as we can ourselves. The true and independent progressives.
