Officer Caesar Goodson Acquitted on All Counts

Yesterday, the Prosecutors and Defense in the trial of Caesar Goodson gave their closing arguments. The city has been on edge as of late, especially given the recent acquittal of Officer Edward Nero a month ago exactly on May 23.

Of course everyone remembers the uprising that began in downtown Baltimore on April 12, 2015 - a little over a year ago. It's a personal issue for me because I was born and raised in Baltimore (though I now live outside of the state), so I can only imagine what my people are going through in that city right now. The people of Baltimore who have struggled with both gang violence on one side and police misconduct on the other just want to see justice served. Instead you have many who want to continue the cycle of state violence apologizing as I wrote about a month ago.

This verdict is of major importance also due to the fact that Goodson is the one carrying the heaviest counts of all the Officers who were indicted by the Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby on May 25,2015. Goodson faces second-degree depraved heart murder, manslaughter, second-degree assault, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. Legal analysts have even acknowledged the historic nature of this trial given it would hold an officer accountable during the arrest of a citizen.

UPDATE:

This morning Judge Barry Williams acquitted Officer Caesar Goodson on all counts in the murder of Freddie Gray stating there was 'not enough evidence' to support the charges...even the charges of reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.

Once again we are led to believe, by what can only be called one of the worst criminal justice systems in the developed world, that the murder of a Black man was somehow justified and whatever happened happened because he deserved it. Those aren't the words the Judge used, but the implication is the same as it has always been.

We cannot even begin to have an honest discussion about race until the issue of Black lives is properly addressed. The assault and war being waged on the Black community (and other communities as well) is very real and the Establishment has an agenda to downplay said war.
